Unfortunately, he ran away from his apprenticeship with another apprentice - allegedly to Bristol. See the newspaper account in the Sources below - I have transcribed the actual newpaper article that appeared 12 June 1812 in the Taunton Courier offering a reward for his return. One might wonder if it were indolence or harsh treatment that drove the two to abscond...(Thank you to Mr Paul Mansfield of Somerset for indexing the Taunton Courier!).5

In Feb 1825, when his unit, the 13th Regiment of Foot (Somerset Light), is despatched from Rangoon down the Irrawaddy River, Samuel Fearncombe remains in Rangoon sick. between 25 June 1824 and February 1826 at Rangoon and countryside, Burma.

The newspaper entry is regarding a runaway apprentice called Edward Thomas. He ran away from a Mr Cox ironmonger at Taunton. Samuel F also worked for Mr Cox and ran away with him. Samuel was aged about 16 and was short, dark and had signs of smallpox on his face.
They had been spotted near Bridgwater and it was suspected they were going to Bristol where Samuel had an uncle. - [S48] Taunton St Mary, ENTRY: Jan 11th, 1798 Samuel, son of Samuel and Betty Ferncombe Born Sep 4, 1796

- [S45] Taunton Courier, Jun 18, 1812 This article appeared on the front page of the Taunton Courier on Thursday June 18, 1812 (spelling, punctuation, capitalization as it appeared):
APPRENTICE RAN AWAY
"On Saturday Evening last, ELOPED, from the
Service of Mr. Cox, Ironmonger, TAUNTON,
EDWARD THOMAS, aged about fifteen years, five feet
five inches high, light complexion, blue eyes, and curled
hair; he wore away a blue jacket and trowsers, and was
seen five miles below Bridgwater on Monday morning last
in company with Samuel Fearncombe, a lad aged about
sixteen years, is short of his age, dark complexion, a little
marked with the small pox, who absconded from his pa-
rents of this town, and was also in the service of the said
Mr. Cox; he wore away a dark brown jacket and trowsers.
It is supposed the said apprentice, Edward Thomas and
Samuel Fearncombe are gone to Bristol, the said Edward
Thomas having a Brother, and Samuel Fearncombe, an
Uncle, residing in that place.
Whoever will apprehend the said Edward Thomas, and
give news of such apprehension to his Master, Mr. Cox,
will be handsomely rewarded; --but
Whoever harbours the said Apprentice in their employ,
after this Public Notice, will be prosecuted according to law.
Dated Taunton, June 16th, 1812." - [S43] Musters, Muster record Oct 1 - Dec 31, 1833 shows Samuel Fearncombe in the Somerset Light Infantry 13th Regiment of Foot in Agra, India.
Indication that he had already served at least 14 years in the military. (However, he may and prob was associated with different regiment(s) previously. - [S43] Musters, WO 12/3057 Promoted to Corporal.
- [S41] Will of Henry Fearncombe, "To Margaret Fearncombe who resides with me, the widow of my late brother Samuel Fearncombe...." Date of will is Nov 11, 1843.
- [S43] Musters, In the muster, WO12/3060, is the following: Drowned in river Ganges. According to the muster he was on his way to Calcutta from Kurnaul (near Delhi). It is not clear if he had actually arrived at Calcutta. I was advised that the Ganges would have been a main transportation route for the British Army at that time.
From the muster record, two others are listed as having drowned on the same day as Samuel; I would suspect in the same incident:
Pte John Barrett and Pte. Nicholas Hansford. - [S43] Musters.
