From: Paul Mallatratt, East London Cemetery
Dear Lauren,
Thank you for your message regarding John & Margaret Steffens. I have searched the registers and have found burial entries for both of them, so it is with pleasure I write with the information you require.
John Steffens, buried on 25 Oct 1877, aged 40 years, late of 12 Star Street, Barking Road, West Ham, buried in common grave no. 19242-21.
Margaret Steffens (entered in register as Stiffens), buried on 20 Oct 1904, 67 years, late of 15 Mary Street (no other detail), buried in common grave no. 7620A-21.
A common grave is one that would not have been purchased by an individual family (more than likely due to cost) and unrelated persons would have been buried together. The vast majority of burials which took place in the cemetery up until the early 1960's took place in common or public graves. As these types of grave traditionally are less frequently visited than private family owned graves, memorials erected on them would generally deteriorate faster, through eventual neglect, and would be less reliable grave markers. Over time, they would break and be taken away, leaving no marker on the grave. Because of the age of the above graves it is very unlikely that we would be able to accurately identify
their locations, should you wish to visit in the future, although we
would be able to point you in the general direction.
I hope this information is useful. If you require any further detail,
please let me know.
Regards,
Paul Mallatratt. - [S64] 1881 Census, PRO Ref RG11 Piece 1717 Folio 143 Page 98.
